Shopping addiction - unless you’re “just looking” - can be an expensive hobby.
You may be addicted to shopping because you’re a shopaholic and like buying new things. Or you may be like an increasing number of people who “comfort shop” to help make them feel better, at least until the credit card bill arrives.
Whatever the cause of your compulsive shopping addiction, help is at hand.
The first step is to realize that you are addicted to shopping. This may need the help of one or more honest friends or colleagues but if you don’t take this step, it won’t be easy to change your behavior.
Next, work out when you most often shop until you drop:
- When you’re bored
- When you’re depressed or feeling down
- Or some other trigger that causes you to go out and spend money
Once you’ve done this, you’ll need to start work on changing your reaction to these situations.
If you most often go out and shop when you’re bored, start work on ways to keep yourself occupied. Maybe take up a new hobby - ideally one that doesn’t cause you to spend thousands of dollars more on it. Maybe get out more or socialize with friends. Whatever works best for you and takes your mind off the boredom.
On the other hand, if your shopping addiction kicks in when you’re feeling down, then you’ll need to do something to help change your mood. This could be as simple as playing your favorite song or it may need tackling at a more deep rooted level.
One simple and inexpensive way is to get hold of a hypnosis track that tackles your shopping addiction. Just play the track on your iPod and no-one else need know that you’re working on your addiction to shopping.
