How To Make Your Own Luck

Have you noticed how some people are luckier than others and wondered if it’s possible to make your own luck?

They are the ones who win prizes, get the raise at work and generally seem to get all the luck that’s around.

Other people seem to be almost permanently unlucky.

If you fall into this second group, or if you just want to increase the amount of luck in your life, the good news is that it’s more in your control than you might first think.

Have you ever noticed that whatever you think about most seems to come into your life? That’s because the Law of Attraction is coming into effect.

You get more of what you focus on.

Whether that’s more luck or less luck. Whatever you decide you’re going to get, you’re probably going to be proved correct. So why not make your own luck?

The good news is that you can change your luck.

There are a few different ways to do this. One is through a system called Cosmic Ordering, where you place an order with the universe and let it come back to you (weird concept, I know!).

But there are lots more ways – and there have been scientific studies that actually prove lucky is all in the mind. In fact, some of them were quite awkward to run because they involved putting a note on the pavement and some the supposedly unlucky people to walk along the street. The snag was that – because the street was a normal one – regular lucky people often spotted the note before the test subjects did.

Luck isn’t a matter of crossing your fingers

Superstition generally has no influence over how lucky you are.

That said, it won’t harm your chances and if you believe that crossing your fingers or stroking that lucky rabbit’s paw or any other superstitious thing you do will help increase your luck, there’s a good chance it will become a self-fullfilling prophecy.

Why?

Because a positive or lucky attitude is very helpful.

It really is a case of those people who think (or even know) they’re lucky are actually luckier.

But even if your current outlook is that you’re an unlucky person, you can change that around and start to attract more luck into your life.

So by all means get a lucky mascot that you carry with you and reinforce that attitude whenever you can.

Notice when lucky things happen

What we focus on is what happens in our lives.

Or, more accurately, what we really focus on, rather than what we claim to focus on.

While you’re reading this page, make a note of the thoughts that come in to your mind.

If you’ve already thought that luck only happens to other people or if you’ve heard a nagging doubt in the back of your mind on any of the ideas, chances are that you’re not really focused on positively lucky things.

So start noticing when lucky things do happen to you. They’ve probably already happened in abundance today:

  • You’re alive – that in itself is fantastically lucky. Scientists disagree on the odds of life happening but they all agree it’s a fairly slim chance. And then you’re alive (in this incarnation if you believe in that idea) as a human, not as a frog or a fly or any other creature.
  • You’re abundant – by definition you’ve got internet access, you’ve eaten today, you’ve almost certainly got a roof over your head, you’ve almost certainly got friends – real, physical, friends who you meet with regularly and real, virtual, friends who you converse with via Skype, Facebook, text or whatever.
  • You’re living in exciting times – our lives are changing at a rapid pace. If you’re over 20 years old, the internet has come of age during your lifetime. If you’re over 50 years old we’ve (probably) landed on the moon and (definitely) sent probes out to other planets and even to the edges of the solar system. Progress is progressing super-fast. Which I think makes it a lucky time to be alive.
  • There’s entertainment options all over the place – we’re no longer limited to a few books in a stuffy library or fewer television channels than you could count on the fingers of one hand. Entertainment options are everywhere and they’re incredibly affordable. Few people could spend millions of dollars on a game or a movie but everyone with a handful of dollars has access to them.

Ideally every time something lucky happens to you, acknowledge it. In your head or out loud if it’s appropriate, say “thank you”. At the end of each day write down the lucky things that have happened to you in a gratitude journal. That will send positive reinforcement to your mind and you’ll be even luckier tomorrow.

Believe in yourself

Being lucky is part of your belief structure.

And believing in yourself is part of that.

After all, if you don’t believe in yourself, that will reflect in the outside world and other people will be less inclined to believe in you.

But what does that phrase mean?

Quite simply, believing in yourself means believing that you can do most of the tasks you set your mind to. I say most because it’s unlikely that you’ll flap your arms and start flying. But the day to day things you’re involved with are certainly within your power.

If you drive a car or ride a bike or walk somewhere, you already believe in your ability to safely get from point A to point B. That’s a belief you already hold – and it’s a lucky one because it happens near enough every journey you make. You safely get to the other end of the journey. Sometimes without even really knowing how you got there.

There are lots of other things you do on auto-pilot. Start noticing them and start focusing on them so that you do them even better.

And believe that’s the case.

Because the more you believe, the more it will happen. And that includes believing in being one of the luckiest people on the planet.

Expect luck to happen

This goes alongside the law of attraction.

Whether or not you believe in it, the law of attraction is happening.

If you’re currently focused on bad luck, there’s a good chance that’s what you’re getting.

Going back to superstitious beliefs, if you believe things happen in threes then you’ll notice whatever thing it was until the third occurrence, even if you have to almost make up the third instance or twist reality until it fits.

Then you’ll focus on something else. So even if subsequently another one or two of the same thing happen, your mind will do its best to ignore tham. Unless, of course, it’s another three of the same kind of thing in quick succession, then you’ll spot the second batch of three and your mind will reinforce the belief.

But the same thing happens with luck.

The more you expect luck to happen – and the more often you acknowledge it when it does – then the more often it will happen. Because you’ve gone out of your way to expect it and notice it.

Share your luck

That might mean posting about your luck on Facebook or Twitter.

It might mean going out for a meal with friends to celebrate how lucky you’ve just been.

Or it could just be an excuse – there are so many things you could assign to luck that you can then use the “let’s celebrate” excuse and go out and celebrate.

Once again, that helps nudge you towards being a luckier person.

It’s that focus word again.

Sharing when you’re lucky helps put the people you associate with in a better mood (so long as you don’t inadvertently give them an excuse to gloat).

Share – whether it’s a coffee, a meal, a drink or an experience somewhere. Or even just some quality time with your friends, children or significant other.

Cut down on the negatives

A lot of people have a negative voice inside their head. Some people call that their inner critic.

Other people walk around in a permanently miserable state. You can spot them a mile away and you probably cross the street or pretend to be on the phone or do whatever else is neceassary to keep their negative energy from afflicting you.

But if you’re that person – if you could drag down the mood of a room just by walking into it – then it’s time to put paid to your negative thinking.

Chip away at it.

It’s highly unlikely you’ll be able to just think positive all the time if you’ve been feeding yourself a diet of nagatives for months or years.

You can cut out some of the negative influences in your life fairly easily.

News is one of them – stop watching those bulletins or rolling news and stop clicking the links that take you off to news sites. There’s often the option to hide them or at least reduce the frequency they show up. And today’s computers are actually quite good at learning what you do and reacting accordingly.

So even just not clicking on news links should cut down the number of times they try to tempt you.

Check your TV programs as well. If you’re always watching negative programs (murder porn or police chase shows for instance) then they’re actually negatives and by watching them you’re attracting more negatives into your life.

Lester Levenson took this to the extreme – he put himself on a regime of only ever watching comedy shows and that helped nurse him back to health.

So do yourself a favour and start cutting down on your intake of negatives.

And those you can’t avoid, turn the situation around as much as you can.

Relax more and get luckier

Anxiety and nervousness affects how lucky we are.

Tests have shown that to be the case, probably because our focus is on the anxiousness and nerves and they’re both negative.

Sometimes really negative.

Relaxing is a skill that needs to be learned in our hectic modern world.

Gone are those long, lazy (dare I say boring) Sundays that happened when we were younger.

Gone are the times when 11pm at night was late.

Relaxing is something you need to schedule in to your life.

And that doesn’t mean that it should always be relaxing with a glass of wine. Sure, a glass every now and then is almost certainly OK (naturally depending on which studies you choose to read and believe) but alcohol is a depressant and that won’t help you feel luckier.

Different people relax in different ways:

  • Reading a good book can work – you can get engrossed in the story line or use it as part of your personal development program.
  • Chilling to some music works for a lot of people – whilst there are specific chill out tracks nowadays, there’s also a good chance you’ve got some tracks that help you unwind.
  • Meditation works for a lot of people. Personally, I play myself a meditation track to help me relax before I go to sleep.
  • A nice long, warm, bath has always been an option even though people seem to prefer the speed of showers.
  • A gentle walk in a local park – getting back to nature is an excellent way to relax. Combine that with a walking meditation and you’ll find that your focus improves.

Find a way that helps you to relax and you’ll begin to relax your way into being a luckier person because luck is a kind-of happy-go-lucky creature and it much prefers the company of relaxed people.

Make a game of being lucky

It’s a bit like the childhood game of I-Spy.

Challenge yourself to notice when you’ve been lucky.

If you consider yourself to be an unlucky person, start by challenging yourself to notice just one lucky event per day.

Then gradually increase the number until you’ve made a habit of spotting lucky event after lucky event happening in your life.

It might take a few days or even a few weeks.

And you may need to make a conscious effort, especially at the start. Maybe put a note in your phone to remind you at lunch time and evening meal time and before you go to bed.

Whatever it takes to get you notice when good luck has come your way.

Because you’re almost certainly already luckier than you think you are.

And making a game out of being lucky is quite a fun way of attracting more luck into your life.

Use hypnosis to improve your luck

You can use the power of hypnosis to transform your luck.

This works on a subtler level than most of the other techniques I’ve talked aboutand involves even less effort on your part.

As you listen to the hypnosis track, you’ll gradually change the way you think so that you start to become a luckier person almost automatically.

You’ll no longer be the person in the luck experiment who walks straight over the $5 bill on the way to the experiment. Yes, people did this and “unlucky” people were much more likely to miss the bill than lucky ones. Even though it was in the same place every time the experiment was performed.
