The Art of Making Conversation
If you’re in a room full of strangers, it can be difficult to start up a conversation or begin making conversation. You stand there, clutching your coffee, hoping someone else will make the first move and start talking to you.
Or, even worse, you’re sat opposite your dream partner and the conversation either never starts or just stops. Leaving an awkward silence hanging in the air.
So how can you learn the art of conversation? Ideally without resorting to those cheesy lines you’ve always hated when other people use them with you.
So how can you start making conversation?
Let’s face it, most conversations don’t start because you’re nervous.
Maybe you’re worried about saying the wrong thing. And it’s definitely worth avoiding talking about politics or religion if you’ve just met someone.
Fishing around, hoping something will gel between you is another option. But it’s risky and it also calls for you to come up with at least one or two ideas. Which is OK unless your throat has gone dry and your mind completely blank.
It’s probably worth skimming the news headlines on a regular basis to see whether there’s anything that could provide a hook to start a conversation. Just beware of using anything that’s too heavy and could just drag the conversation down too far too fast.
Sports are a good conversation topic if the person you’re speaking to shares the same interest. Otherwise they could easily turn them to boredom or (if they support an opposing team) even outright hostility.
One easy way to “cheat” when you learn more about the art of conversation is to use hypnosis to help you.
