How to overcome compulsive spending


Compulsive spending, especially as the economy tightens, isn’t the kind of addiction you’d choose to have.

So how do you overcome your addiction to spending money?

There are some debt reduction courses available, but they’re no good if you reduce your debts with one hand but continue to spend money as though it’s going out of fashion with the other hand.

You could go “cold turkey” and cut up all your credit cards. But let’s face it, that’s probably not something you’d do without a gun to your head.

So what else could work?

Like any other habit, it’s best to get as close to the root cause as possible.

So if you “comfort shop” and that’s the cause of your compulsive spending,  then it’s time to identify those times when you seek comfort in shopping.

Window shopping can be ok, so long as you’re not tempted to get a “little something” for yourself.

Helping a friend shop can work as a substitute as well.

But the danger with both of these is that you’ll start to lust towards some of the items you’re window shopping for.
