<p>Sometimes all it can take is a pause for thought. Those extra split seconds give your mind a chance to process more information and give you a more rounded opinion.</p>
<p>If that&#8217;s not your style, try a re-evaluation of your opinion in a week or so&#8217;s time. That&#8217;s long enough for a second chance to actually happen without the danger of your initial view becoming so entrenched that you&#8217;d need a ton of dynamite to shift it.</p>
<p><strong>Just accept them as they are</strong></p>
<p>This can be difficult at first but if you can train your mind to accept people and things for who and what they are &#8211; as opposed to who or what you think they should be &#8211; then you&#8217;re on the right track.</p>
<p>Acceptance is an art. Some people never learn it (but you&#8217;re not a dictator so there&#8217;s a good chance you can learn) others only begrudgingly accept other people. Your choice entirely but if you can err towards the side of just accepting other people at face value then you&#8217;ll free up a lot of your time for more productive things in your life.</p>
<p><strong>Stop trying to change others</strong></p>
<p>Quite often the judgemental side of us is actually a thinly disguised attempt to change the people around us.</p>
<p>We feel that if we&#8217;re judgemental often enough then they will change &#8211; and hopefully improve &#8211; to meet our high standards.</p>
<p>One major snag with this is that most people we meet on a regular basis aren&#8217;t chameleons. They can&#8217;t change at whim to meet the different standards of everyone they meet. That just isn&#8217;t possible.</p>

<p>Quite often our selfish attitude stems from being self centered and almost blissfully unaware of other people. It could be that we are just self absorbed but this can be interpreted by others as being selfish amongst other things.</p>
<p>Start paying a bit more attention to other people. You&#8217;ll be pleasantly surprised at how much you get back from this. There&#8217;s a good chance that you&#8217;ll start to be included in events and discussions more often. Take advantage of this and start to share things with other people more often.</p>

<p>One of the ways of overcoming selfishness is to embrace the idea that there is ambundance in life and that it&#8217;s all around us.</p>
<p>Selfishness can be brought on by the feeling or fear of lack. If your mindset says that there is a limited quantity of things then your natural instinct will be to hoard everything in order to conserve it. Being selfish is the natural outcome of this mindset.</p>
<p>Whenever you are out and about, make a point to reinforce the idea to yourself that there is abundance everywhere &#8211; the roads stretching into the distance, buildings all over the place, people around you, and so on. <p>Announce to anyone who will listen that you&#8217;ve pledged to walk more and that they are to nag you if they catch you cheating on your pledge to yourself. These announcements will confirm to your subconscious mind that you&#8217;re actually serious about this idea that you&#8217;re going to walk more.</p>
<p><strong>Buy a pedometer</strong></p>
<p>They say that what gets measured gets done and that works for walking as much as anything else. A <a href="http://hypnosisabc.com/pedometer.php" target="_blank">pedometer</a> is any easy way to keep track of the number of steps you take every day, just keep it in your pocket (and remember to take it out before using the washing machine) and make a note of the number of steps you take every day. <p>It&#8217;s not easy to be objective when watching your favorite team playing a game against a bitter rival. No matter how good the opposing team, you&#8217;re unlikely to be more objective when you&#8217;re watching them. You could probably manage to be at least reasonably objective when you&#8217;re watching a playoff between two teams, neither of whom you support, but that&#8217;s as close as you&#8217;re likely to get.</p>
<p>Politics is another thing that it&#8217;s easy to be biased about. This subject often literally splits the nation.</p>
<p>Practice becoming more objective by picking on topics that you don&#8217;t really care much about. Unless you&#8217;re a betting person, chances are that you don&#8217;t really care whether a coin lands heads or tails. See whether you can be more objective about the outcome or &#8211; just for fun &#8211; see whether you can turn the tables and get really wound up about the coin landing on one side or the other. Or try to convince yourself that the outcome is important enough to not be objective about it.</p>
<p>Distance yourself from your answer. Pretend that you&#8217;re someone else who is listening to your argument. Would you think that your argument was onjective or not?</p>

<p>If you know that a phone call is imminent, rehearse it!</p>
<p>This can be out loud if there&#8217;s no-one in ear shot. Or it can be inside your head if that&#8217;s safer.</p>
<p>The more you rehearse, the easier the final act of speaking on the phone will be.</p>
<p>Of course, you need to be ready to ad-lib when the conversation doesn&#8217;t take the route you originally imagined. But chances are that once you&#8217;ve started, some of your phone fear will drop away.</p>
<p>When you&#8217;re on the phone, stand up. Daft as this sounds, it will come through in your voice. Standing up puts you more in control.</p>

<p>Again, this will come through in your voice and the other person will be more relaxed when they&#8217;re speaking to you.</p>
