How To Beat Your Depression

Depression is one of those modern labels that we attach to ourselves when we’re feeling low, so how can you beat your depression?

It can range from just feeling “down in the dumps” right the way through to clinical depression where we make Marvin from the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy look positively happy.

Whichever end of the depression spectrum you’re at, there are a few things you can do to help beat your depression:

Ideas to beat your depression…

  • Get some exercise. Anything from a brisk walk upwards will do. Exercise gets endorphins flowing round your body and helps lift your mood.
  • Talk to someone. If you haven’t got anyone close to you who’ll listen, call the Samaritans. But whoever you choose, talk!
  • Change the record. Literally. Put an upbeat CD in your player or change the selection on your iPod. Bouncy music will help in the same way that slow, sombre music will hinder your depression.
  • Watch a movie. (Not a weepie.) Ideally one that’s not too gloomy or, even better, a comedy.
  • If you’ve got a pet dog or cat, stroke it. This has been proven to help in lots of cases. If you haven’t got a pet of your own, consider a stroll in your local park and introduce yourself to some of the dogs running round there.
  • Switch off the news. There’s enough negativity in your life at the moment without these doom and gloom merchants adding to it.
  • Get professional help. Your doctor or counsellor is trained to deal with this. Use them to help you beat your depression.
