How To Do Automatic Writing
If you’ve watched shows like Most Haunted or some of Derren Brown’s performances such as the one where he used automatic writing to predict the winning UK lottery numbers, chances are you’ll have come across the idea of automatic writing.
The idea behind this is that you go into a trance-like state and let your hand “do it’s own thing”. You then do your best to interpret the resultant scribbles (that a 3 year old wouldn’t exactly be proud of) and see what predictions it contains.
So, since it’s fun, the question is how to do automatic writing?
You’re going to need to find a quiet place where you’re unlikely to be disturbed. The last thing you want while you’re letting your mind run free is people coming up to you and asking what you’re doing.
You’ll need to experiment to see where you get best results – some people like to use a table or desk, others prefer to rest a pad on their lap. As with most things in life, there’s no right or wrong method so feel free to experiment.
Then let yourself become totally relaxed and allow your thoughts to drift through your mind like a bunch of fluffy clouds.
It’s then time to let your hand meander across the pad in front of it. Don’t worry if it takes a few seconds or even minutes before anything starts to happen, especially if this is your first attempt at automatic writing. With practice your writing will start flowing more easily.
Then just let whatever flows from your hand through to your pad happen. Don’t force matters. Chill out and let the process take place.
Once the flow of automatic writing stops the fun begins!
You need to interpret it.
It will likely be quite messy – unless you’ve cheated – so you’ll need some patience to work out what the letters mean and how they can be interpreted.
