How To Live Longer: Can You Extend Your Life Span?
Throughout the ages, we’ve always dreamed about how to live longer. The secret of eternal youth has been a quest that is kind of happening – just think of all the “oldies” jogging along or going out and enjoying themselves – but for many of us, it’s not happening fast enough.
The signs of old age are all too evident: hair graying, face wrinkled, increasing waistlines, all the usual evidence that we’re not as young as we used to be.
So is the idea of how to live longer just a pipe dream or are there things we can do to prolong our life?
Ideas for how to live longer
The first thing to realize is that there’s no point in living a longer life if you’re going to spend it in a hospital bed. So we need to equate living a longer life with living a healthier life. Sure, we can’t stop nasty things happening but we can certainly reduce the risk of them wherever possible.
Start by examining your way of life.
If you’re a smoker, consider quitting. Even if you’ve had the habit most of your life, quitting will still help. The effects of nicotine will pass through your body and, over time, will be flushed right out.
If you drink too much then take a look at cutting down your alcohol consumption. The “exact” amount of alcohol that’s safe (or otherwise) is still in doubt but you’ll almost certainly have a good idea what works for you. If in doubt, if you think you’re drinking too much, you probably are.
Drink more water. It’s unlikely you’re drinking the recommended amount of 8 glasses per day – this is hard work to start with, although you do get used to it – so begin to increase your water consumption. Water works to flush out the toxins from your body as well as keeping you hydrated, which will help cut down those unwelcome wrinkles without resorting to injections of chemicals.
Be careful with your diet. You don’t have to turn into a monk but reducing your snacking and cutting down your salt intake won’t harm and will probably help. Salt is one of those “modern” things that we add to lots of food. But it wasn’t that long ago that salt was expensive and reserved for wealthy people. Our bodies need some salt but simply aren’t used to the quantities we routinely add to our food nowadays.
Take steps to reduce your stress levels. Some stress is OK and even helpful. But modern levels can be too high and can have adverse effects on us. Give yourself some quality time and find a way that you can relax and unwind. Maybe listening to some relaxing music, maybe going for a walk, maybe turning the television off for a while or even switching the cell phone to silent. Whatever works for you – experiment if you don’t cut your stress levels instantly, we all work differently and stress is no exception.
Hand-in-hand with this is have more fun! Too often as we get older, we get more serious. Fun and laughter are excellent ways of keeping us younger and healthier.
